Fire Prevention/Code Enforcement

Our prevention and education efforts are focused on preventing fires in the community and reducing the impact of emergency situations. KVFR provides a Fire Code Official through a contract to the City of Ellensburg which includes plan review, fire code inspections, fire investigations and code consultation for all construction projects and business occupancies inside the City.

All commercial occupancies with public and/or employee access are inspected inside the City annually. Additionally, KVFR flow tests fire hydrants on a seven-year rotation thereby insuring operational readiness and adequate fire flows in all areas of the City. There are currently 830 fire hydrants in the city, all of which are mapped electronically for responders.

In 2015, 811 occupancy inspections were conducted. During an inspection, personnel review occupancy pre-plans for response, check for safety violations, and are available to discuss life safety concerns and/or answer any questions community members have regarding our services. All members participate in the program which is headed by the Fire Prevention Captain Joe Seemiller.

Fire cause summary: Many fires we respond to are investigated on-scene and do not require a formal investigation. The top four accidental causes of fires in our community in 2015 were: improper use of heating source/appliance, electrical, cooking and outside fires.

CAUSE OF IGNITION # INCIDENTS % of TOTAL
Intentional 23 11.9%
Failure of equipment or heat source 33 17.0%
Act of nature 5 2.6%
Cause undetermined after investigation 15 7.7%
Cause under investigation 19 9.8%
Unintentional 90 46.4%

Public Education: Public education is a priority for KVFR. Prevention and mitigation prove to be far more effective than responding to an emergency after the fact. Programs are crafted to meet the needs of specific groups and are delivered at the convenience of our community members. Programs include training on: fire prevention; fire extinguishers; fire exiting; injury prevention; first aid and CPR; and alcohol and drug awareness. Please contact Captain Joe Seemiller at 509-933-7241 with questions or to schedule public education sessions.
